What is Legionnaires' disease?

Legionnaires' disease, also known as Legionella Pneumophila SG1, is a disease caused by the Legionella bacteria. The disease can be transmitted by inhaling small water droplets containing the bacteria, such as through air conditioning systems or the mist created by showers.
Symptoms of Legionnaires' disease can include fever, coughing, shortness of breath, and muscle pain. In some cases, the disease can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia or even death.
Legionnaires' disease got its name because it was first identified following a severe outbreak during a veterans' reunion. 221 veterans stayed in a hotel that was contaminated with Legionnaires' disease. In the end, 34 people died of pneumonia caused by the bacteria. The disease is more common in older people, smokers, and people with weakened immune systems. It is important to detect and treat the bacteria source to prevent serious complications.

Why does Legionella potentially occur more often in Dutch drinking water installations than abroad?

This is due to the way the Dutch treat drinking water. While Dutch purification methods ensure healthy and tasty water quality witch ranks in the top charts, the risk of Legionella is higher than abroad because they do not add chlorine to the water. Chlorine kills a number of bacteria and therefore ensures the biological water safety. The disadvantage is that the chlorine is consumed and it affects the taste of the water. In the Netherlands, they do not use chlorine, so Legionella bacteria can move through the pipeline in tiny amounts. Over time, it can build up in a water supply system in the form of biofilm. This is also the reason why there may (over time) be Legionella in brand new drinking water installations. This is also one of the reasons why the Dutch have strict rules on Legionella management that are meticulously maintained.

Why is it important to perform rapid tests?

Performing regular rapid tests for Legionnaires' disease (Legionella Pneumophila SG1) is important for non-priority institutions that are not required to carry out culture tests for this bacterium.
Using the Hydrosense Legionella rapid test kits offers many benefits, such as:
  • the rapid tests are more accurate than culture tests because
    • it detects the entire life cycle of the Legionella bacterium,
    • it is taken on site in the "natural environment",
    • there is no sample damage during transport, and
    • it shows very fast results so you can act.
  • certainty about the safety of your water pipes,
  • control over your water safety to ensure your health and that of your customers and employees.
  • and economic benefits through rapid detection and resolution of any problems. This can lead to less downtime and lower costs for repairs and maintenance.

In short, the Hydrosense rapid test kits offer an excellent solution for companies and individuals who want to check their water pipes for Legionella.

Validation

The tests have been tested by prominent water authorities including the Dutch KWR and German DaKK. They are easy to use and provide reliable results that are 25% more reliable than the ISO requires from laboratories (11731:2017), so you don't have to worry about the reliability of the test. It is important to note that the rapid test kits do not detect Non-Pneumophila Legionella bacteria. These are the non-pathogenic variants. The rapid test kits only test the pathogenic pneumophila variants (SG1-15). Legionellosis, or Legionnaires' disease, is SG1 (Serogroup 1) is detected from 100 KVE. The other variants are only detected in large quantities, namely: ≥ KVE/L: L.p. Sg-2,3,8,11,13,14 / 1,00E+05; L.p. Sg-4,5,6,7,9,10,15 / 1,00E+04; L.p. Sg-12 / 8,00E+03; S.aureus / 2.00E+05.

The new version that tests all pathogenic variants from as little as 100 colony-forming units will be released in early 2023.
